Probably a Richmond, Virginia sitter.
Excellent condition with no cracks or breaks.
3 1/4" x 2 3/4".
Provenance: From an important Virginia private collection. Found in Richmond VA.
Catalogue Note: Edward Samuel Dodge (1816-1857) was the younger brother of the well-known artist, John Wood Dodge (1807-1893). Born in New York, E.S. Dodge later moved south, where he earned respect and recognition for his miniatures painted in Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia. His son was born in Richmond in 1848, around the date that the present miniature was painted. That combined with the Richmond recovery history of the present portrait strongly suggests this sitter was a citizen of antebellum Richmond.
