Catalogue Note: Little is known about the artist, Frank Thurlo (1828-1913), but a number of his small watercolor landscapes depicting the region around Newburyport, Massachusetts survive. He is thought to have been formally trained as a carpenter and self-trained as a painter. There is also speculation that Thurlo introduced Martin Johnson Heade to the marshes around Newburyport, upon which the latter produced a number of iconic works.
