Catalogue Note: Alexander Stuart (1734-1823) was an important historical figure in Augusta and Rockbridge Co. history. He served with distinction as a major in the Revolutionary War, as a Judge he had close associations with Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe and other important leaders of the Revolutionary era, and along with Samuel Houston, Sr. he was one of the largest benefactors and contributors to the famed Liberty Hall Academy in Rockbridge Co., which would later become Washington and Lee University.
