Provenance: Recently discovered in Tennessee.
Catalogue Note: This is the only known piece of pottery signed or attributable to George W. Fleet, a member of Strasburg's noted Fleet family of potters. He was the son of Lorenzo Fleet and brother of Theodore "Thedy" Fleet. George was married in 1875 in Shenandoah Co. at which time he was recorded as a potter. It is not known how long he worked as a potter in Strasburg as he does not appear in the 1880 census and the 1890 census was lost to fire. We do know that he moved to Blacksburg, VA in 1894 where his last two children were born. His occupations while in Blacksburg included painter, shoe repairman, and salesman at a grocery store. Fleet died in Blacksburg in 1939 from pneumonia.
