square, block base with stamped decorations to sides, upper edge, and to hinged lid, carved and applied fish to front, surmounted with carved leaf-form uprights serving as the pen rack, aquamarine glass commercial ink bottle inserted into carved-out compartment to underside that retains its original nailed sheet-iron cover. Retains an outstanding original dry surface with excellent dark patina.
Second half 19th century.
Excellent as-found condition, glue residue under base from later applied felt.
