Catalogue Note: Samuel Beck was a member of a prominent Philadelphia merchant family. He and his wife lived for 32 years at "Sweetbriar", just outside of Philadelphia. He served in the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives and the United States Congress. Beck also was a founder of the Pennsylvania Institution for the Blind and was an officer of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. He kept extensive diaries/journals from 1800 until his death in 1862. He produced many illustrations from his travels like the examples in the present lot. Twenty-three volumes of Beck's journals are in the collection of the historical Society of Pennsylvania.
