MT. CRAWFORD, VA, October 1, 2021 —- The Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates Fall Fine & Decorative Arts Auction features a number of exceptional collections and contains a wide selection of desirable material, including everything from contemporary paperweights and Tiffany art glass to Oriental carpets and fine jewelry. The large auction will take place over three days, Thursday, October 14, 2021; Friday, October 15, 2021; and Saturday, October 15, 2021, with in-house, absentee, phone, and live internet bidding available.
Thursday’s session, Day One, beginning at 9:00 am EST, features part two of the paperweight and studio glass collection of Carl Carter, Austin, Texas. Overall, the collection is being offered in three parts, with the remaining session scheduled for the spring of 2022. Part Two on October 14th will feature 500 total lots with 400 lots of individual paperweights and 100 lots of art / studio glass, including many paperweight vases, focusing on vintage and contemporary pieces. Mr. Carter’s collection contains many examples from the most respected and desired paperweight artists, including David Graeber, Paul Stankard, Gordon Smith, Ken Rosenfeld, Debbie and Delmo Tarsitano, Cathy and Colin Richardson, Rick and Melissa Ayotte, Damon MacNaught, and Mike Hunter, among others. The sale will also include large selections of Paul Ysart, and rare antique and vintage St. Louis, Clichy, and Baccarat paperweights and related objects. Many of the rarest forms and methods from several of the aforementioned artists will be offered during the second session and will present a unique opportunity for any paperweight collector to acquire a new treasure. Highlights include a rare Paul Stankard (American, b. 1943) and Barry Sautner (American, 1952-2009) engraved botanical lampwork studio art glass paperweight sculpture (Lot 115); a vintage Saint-Louis concentric millefiori art glass super magnum paperweight basket (Lot 73); an antique Clichy garland millefiori art glass paperweight (Lot 3); and a David Graeber (American, b. 1967) mixed bouquet lampwork studio art glass magnum paperweight sphere / orb.
Friday’s session, Day Two, beginning at 9:00 am EST, features part one of the collection of Larry Spradley, Beaumont, TX comprising over 250 glass, ceramic, and metal miniature lamps of all types, to be followed by American and European art glass including Lalique, Schneider, Steuben, Mt. Washington, &c.; Charles Lotton and other studio glass; a collection of cologne/perfume bottles including antique Lalique examples; 20th/21st century fine china and glass from the Joseph and June Hennage Collection, to benefit the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, including Tiffany-retailed, Herend, Royal Crown Derby, Wedgwood, Minton, Limoges, Steuben, Baccarat, and Waterford, plus more. Highlights include a Lalique Formose art glass vase in emerald green (Lot 1172); a signed Webb & Sons cameo floral junior lamp (Lot 1001); an 18th century Chinese oxblood / sang de boeuf porcelain vase (Lot 1497); and a Salvador Dali for Schiaparelli Le Roy de Soleil perfume bottle (Lot 1221).
Saturday’s session, Day Three, beginning at 9:00 am EST, features material from the collection of the late Theodore “Ted” and Alvina Breckel, Oley, PA and Winnetka, IL; a prominent Princeton, New Jersey family collection; the Joseph and June Hennage Collection, to benefit the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation; property deaccessioned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, proceeds to benefit the Collections Acquisition Fund; plus others. The day’s offerings include a fine art glass and related lighting; a wide selection of paintings, prints, and statuary; Asian material of all types; a fine selection of jewelry and silver; furniture from Georgian to American Classical, Gothic, and Victorian; fine Oriental rugs and carpets; plus more. Highlights include an outstanding Tiffany Studios Dogwood variant confetti leaded art glass electric table lamp (Lot 2122); a fine George III carved mahogany marble-top sideboard table (Lot 2196); an Andre Harvey (American, 1941-2018) bronze figural penguin group titled “A Gathering of Emperors” (Lot 2308); a massive pair of vintage Mexican sterling silver candelabra (Lot 2399); and a fresh-to-the-market Emile Gruppe (American, 1896-1978) New England street scene, probably Rockport, Massachusetts (Lot 2333).
