
MT. CRAWFORD, VA, April 27, 2026 —- The Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates April 22-24 Fine & Decorative Arts Auction was a much-anticipated event, and the results did not disappoint. Overall, the sale produced robust prices in multiple categories, along with a few surprises. The three-day format consisted of just over 2,000 lots of high-quality material and generated very strong levels of participation for the firm, a solid indication of continued vigor in the diverse decorative arts marketplace. With a busy gallery on each day, competition was intense throughout each session with nearly 3,000 registered bidders participating online, by phone, in-house, and through absentee.

Day One on Wednesday featured property from the collections of Elaine Patsourakos, Billerica, MA; Bo and Sandy Rose, Penn Laird, VA; and Richard Stohlman, Chevy Chase, MD; as well as the estates of Margaret A. Winkler, Portage, WI; Dennis Trischler, Woodbridge, VA; Malcolm Bradley, Richmond, VA; and Dr. Delos Hughes, Lexington, VA; plus deaccessioned material from the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, OH and the Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA. The sale featured a selection of American and European art glass, including examples by makers such as Tiffany, Steuben, Mt. Washington, and Stevens and Williams; a fine selection of antique, vintage, and contemporary paperweights and studio glass, including examples by Baccarat, Clichy, Saint Louis, Paul Stankard, Rick Ayotte, Melissa Ayotte, Cathy Richardson, Debbie Tarsitano, and others; a large collection of German ceramic steins, including many fine Mettlach examples; and a selection of lamps and lighting. Top lot for the day was a fine Plated Amberina art glass bowl, which sparked strong pre-sale interest. Ultimately, it was a bidder online who prevailed, pushing the final price to $4,575 (Lot 14 – all prices include a 22% buyer’s premium). Other highlights from Day One included two rare bronze Sinumbra lamp bases at $3,965 (Lot 483); a tall Tiffany Pulled Feather floriform art glass vase at $3,294 (Lot 5); and an antique Sandwich striped flower lampwork art glass paperweight at $3,250 (Lot 6).

Day Two on Thursday featured property from the collections of Bo and Sandy Rose, Penn Laird, VA; Richard Stohlman, Chevy Chase, MD; and James Scott, Charlottesville, VA; as well as the estates of Margaret A. Winkler, Portage, WI; Dennis Trischler, Woodbridge, VA; Malcolm Bradley, Richmond, VA; and Dr. Delos Hughes, Lexington, VA; plus deaccessioned material from the Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA. The sale featured a fine selection of American, British, and Continental silver, including examples by Tiffany, Gorham, and Kalo; ceramics of all types, including rare Russian, Continental, and English examples, as well as an important collection of 18th and 19th century Staffordshire figures; outstanding fine art, including paintings and prints, including examples by Martin Lewis, Oscar Thalinger, and others; canes and walking sticks; plus Asian material, including textiles, fine art, and furniture. Top lot of the day, one of several surprises over the course of the auction, was a pair of Chinese Export porcelain yellow-glazed vases. The rare pair in vibrant color captivated bidders, including an overseas bidder online, who pushed the final price to $34,160 (Lot 1618). Other noteworthy results from Day Two included a fine set of six Russian Kornilov Brothers decorated porcelain plates at $13,420 (Lot 1442); a highly desirable Martin Lewis Stoops in Snow etching at $10,980 (lot 1035); and a rare Arthur J. Stone sterling silver sauce boat at $10,370 (lot 1206).

Day Three on Saturday featured property from the collections of Bo and Sandy Rose, Penn Laird, VA; Richard Stohlman, Chevy Chase, MD; and James Scott, Charlottesville, VA; as well as the estates of Margaret A. Winkler, Portage, WI; Dennis Trischler, Woodbridge, VA; Malcolm Bradley, Richmond, VA; and Dr. Delos Hughes, Lexington, VA; plus deaccessioned material from the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, OH as well as the Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA. The sale featured an extensive selection of fine jewelry and watches, including an excellent collection of pocket watches; fine furniture from Georgian to Continental; Mid-Century Modern material, including a rare Richard Jolley studio art glass totem sculpture; decorative accessories, including tea caddies, sewing boxes, and 19th-century Dore bronze articles, including examples attributed to Pierre-Phillipe Thomire (French, 1751-1843); Oriental rugs and carpets; outstanding fine art, including paintings, prints, and statuary, from Old Master to modern; plus more. Top lot of the day was a very fine oil on canvas portrait likely depicting a young Grand Duke Alexander Pavlovich, who became Tsar Alexander I of Russia in 1801. Despite being unframed, the remarkable portrait captivated everyone in its orbit, but it was ultimately an overseas bidder online who pushed the final price to $19,520 (Lot 2221). Other noteworthy results from Day Three included an extremely rare English George III carved mahogany wall lantern at $17,080 (lot 2443); a very fine French Empire Dore bronze figural centerpiece attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1773-1851) at $13,420 (lot 2618); and an American 18K yellow gold card case with California Gold Rush association at $12,200 (lot 2079).
